Algorithms of our own… Controlling what shows up in our newsfeeds

I’m probably not alone in wondering how the heck to purge Trump stories from my newsfeeds. Pro-Trump, Anti-Trump — Either way I just don’t want to see them.
It’s not that I don’t care, it’s that I inevitably get sucked in and usually end up agitated. Life’s too short for that.

One of the newsfeeds that I routinely read is the Bing feed that comes standard with Microsoft Edge. This does come with tools to “Customize My Feed” but it’s nowhere near good enough.

I seem to spend more time each morning clicking on “Fewer stories like this” and “Hide this story” than I spend reading stories. There’s some miniscule pleasure in doing this but ultimately it’s futile. Whatever their filtering algorithm is, it’s pretty dumb. It doesn’t at all understand what “stories like this” have in common.

Perhaps that’s intentional… Media companies need to make money, so perhaps willful naivety about what I don’t like about articles is in their best financial interest.

This lack of control over what’s featured in my newsfeeds has me longing for tools that will let me create and tweak my own filtering algorithms… I’d begin with a simple one:

Don’t show me any articles that have the name “Trump” in the headline.

Simple to state. Simple to implement. Maybe too simple, but I can always refine my algorithm over time — If _I_ choose to.

So now my ask for those who are reading this article… Do you know of any newsfeed filtering tools that already have features like this?

If so, I’d love to check them out.
